Linda Rosa, California facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Linda Rosa, also known as Linda Rose, was once a small community in California. It used to be in San Diego County but is now part of Riverside County, California. Today, it is no longer a populated place.

Where Was Linda Rosa Located?

The area where Linda Rosa was built is southwest of the old town of Murrieta, California. It was located on the west side of Murrieta Creek. The name "Linda Rosa" comes from Spanish and means "pretty rose."

The Story of Linda Rosa: A California Land Boom Town

Linda Rosa was created during a time in the 1880s when many new towns were planned in Southern California. This period was known as a "land boom" because people were buying and selling land very quickly.

How Linda Rosa Started

In 1887, a company called the Santa Rosa Land & Improvement Company decided to create Linda Rosa. This company belonged to an Englishman named Parker Dear. He owned a large piece of land called the Rancho Santa Rosa.

The company divided 400 acres of land into smaller lots for people to buy. This area was southwest of Murrieta, right next to the California Southern Railroad tracks.

Buildings and Businesses in Linda Rosa

The company spent about $5,000 to build a train station, hoping trains would stop there. However, the railroad never made Linda Rosa a regular stop.

In 1888, the company also built a large hotel called the Linda Rosa Hotel. It cost around $15,000 to build. This hotel was a place for visitors and people interested in buying land to stay.

A company called Linda Rosa Fruit Canning and Preserving Company was started on June 30, 1888. Its goal was to grow fruits and vegetables and then can them. Linda Rosa even had its own post office, named Linda Rose, from November 20, 1888, to March 20, 1890.

Why Linda Rosa Didn't Last

The land boom eventually ended, and the town lots in Linda Rosa did not sell well. Because of this, the post office closed, and mail service was moved to a nearby town called Temecula Station.

The hotel was eventually taken apart, and its materials were used to build a house. Parker Dear, who started the development, went bankrupt. He lost his large ranch to his bank in 1893. Linda Rosa never became the thriving town its founders had hoped for.
