About Judge Linda Parker
Linda Parker earned her first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, in 1980 from the University of Michigan. She then went on to study law and received her law degree, called a Juris Doctor, in 1983. She got this degree from George Washington University Law School.
After finishing law school, she worked as a law clerk for two years. This means she helped a judge with their legal research and writing. From 1985 to 1989, she worked for the United States Environmental Protection Agency. This agency helps protect our environment.
Later, she worked at a law firm in Detroit from 1989 to 1994. She became a partner there in 1992. From 1994 to 2000, she was an assistant United States attorney. This role involves representing the U.S. government in legal cases. She also led the Michigan Department of Civil Rights from 2003 to 2008. This department works to protect people's rights. Before becoming a federal judge, she served as a judge in Michigan's Third Judicial Circuit Court from 2009 to 2014.
Becoming a Federal Judge
On July 25, 2013, President Barack Obama chose Linda Parker to become a United States District Judge. She was nominated to fill a position in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. This position became open when Judge Robert Hardy Cleland retired.
Her nomination was approved by a committee on January 16, 2014. Then, the United States Senate voted to confirm her. On March 12, 2014, the Senate officially approved her nomination. She received her special document, called a judicial commission, on March 17, 2014. This document officially made her a federal judge. Her main office is in Detroit.
Important Decisions by Judge Parker
Judge Parker has made several important decisions during her time on the bench.
In December 2020, she heard a lawsuit that tried to change the results of the 2020 U.S. presidential election in Michigan. This lawsuit was brought by lawyers for the then-president, Donald Trump. Judge Parker dismissed the lawsuit. She stated that the case was full of "theories, guesses, and not facts." She also added that "the people of Michigan have spoken," meaning the election results were clear.
In July 2021, Judge Parker asked all the lawyers who argued Trump's case to appear before her. She was thinking about making them pay fees because she believed they had filed the lawsuit in "bad faith." This means she thought they knew the lawsuit was not based on accurate information. On August 25, 2021, Judge Parker decided that the lawyers had filed the lawsuit for a wrong reason. She ordered them, including Sidney Powell and Lin Wood, to pay the legal fees of some of the people they had sued. She also suggested that their actions be reviewed by their state bar associations, which oversee lawyers' conduct.
