Sir Lindsay Ring's Early Life

Lindsay Ring was born in Herne Hill, London. His parents were George Arthur Ring and Helen Stedman. He attended Dulwich College where he was the captain of the school's fencing team.

After school, he spent a year in Germany. Then, he worked as a bank clerk in London. Later, he joined his family's old business, Ring and Brymer (Birch's). This company was a catering firm.

When World War II began, he joined the Royal Army Service Corps. He was a junior officer and was evacuated from Dunkirk. He also served in the Middle East. After the war, he returned to Ring and Brymer.

Business Career and Public Service

Ring and Brymer (Birch's) was a very famous catering company in London. They had provided food for important events for over 200 years. This included Coronation banquets and events at 10 Downing Street. They also catered for Ascot Racecourse and Henley Royal Regatta.

During World War I, the Ring family lost control of the business. Lindsay Ring rejoined the company in 1945. He worked his way up and by the early 1950s, he had taken back control of the business.

The company grew under his leadership. They added new catering contracts. These included Twickenham Stadium and the Farnborough Airshow. In 1962, he sold the company to Sir Charles Forte. He was then given a position on the board of Forte Holdings.

After selling his business, Sir Lindsay became more involved in the City of London Corporation. This is the local government for the historic City of London. He was elected as a councilman in 1964. From 1968 to 1984, he served as an Alderman.
