History of Lindsey
Early Settlement (1864)
Lindsey was settled in 1864. This happened shortly after Fort Solomon was built. The fort was located less than 0.5 miles (0.8 km) west of where Lindsey is today. The people who settled Lindsey wanted to be close to the fort. This way, they could be safe and protected.
How Lindsey Got Its Name
Lindsey was named after Lindsey Creek. This creek is about 1 mile (1.6 km) north of the community. The creek itself was named after a trapper. This trapper, also named Lindsey, had been working in the area since 1857.
Lindsey as County Seat
For a time, Lindsey was a very important place. It was the first county seat of Ottawa County. A county seat is like the main town or city in a county. It's where the local government offices are located.
Decline of the Community
By the late 1860s, Fort Solomon was no longer needed. The problems between settlers and Native Americans had mostly ended. By 1871, only a few buildings were left at the fort. As the fort declined, so did Lindsey. It was no longer the county seat.
Lindsey Today
Today, Lindsey is a very small community. It has about six homes and no businesses. It's a quiet reminder of its past.
