Ling-Chi Wang's Life

Ling-Chi Wang was born in Xiamen, China, in 1938. When he was 19, in 1957, he moved to the United States.

He studied at the University of Chicago. He earned a master's degree there. In the 1960s, the Civil Rights Movement was happening. This movement fought for equal rights for all people. Because of this, Wang became very interested in Asian American studies. He wanted to learn about the history and experiences of Asian Americans.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Wang became a very important person in Asian American studies. He helped shape how people understood this field.

Fighting for Justice

Ling-Chi Wang was a strong voice for justice. He helped people when they faced unfair treatment.

One important case involved a scientist named Wen Ho Lee. Lee was accused of spying, but many believed he was treated unfairly because he was Asian American. Wang and other Asian American scholars took action. They organized a boycott of two labs run by the University of California. These labs were the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Wang also helped organize a lawsuit against these labs. This lawsuit claimed that people were being judged unfairly based on their race. This is called racial profiling. Wang worked hard to make sure everyone was treated fairly.

Wang also helped uncover the truth about the murder of Henry Liu. Liu was killed in Daly City, California. Wang led a movement that showed the government of Taiwan was involved in this murder. Agents from a group called the Bamboo Union were responsible. Wang's work helped bring this truth to light.
