Linton Chorley Hope (born April 18, 1863 – died December 20, 1920) was a talented sailor and yacht designer from Great Britain. He is famous for winning two gold medals at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.

At the 1900 Olympics, Linton Hope competed in Meulan, France. He was part of a team that included Lorne Currie (the helmsman), John Gretton, and Algernon Maudslay. Together, they won gold in two different sailing events. These were the .5 to 1 ton class race and the Open class race.

About Linton Hope's Life

Linton Hope was born on April 18, 1863, in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England. His birth name was Linton Chorley Hopps. Later in his life, he decided to change his last name to Hope.

In 1898, Linton Hope married Mabel Ellington. They had two children, a son and a daughter. Sadly, their son, Eustace Jack Linton Hope, who became a group captain in the Royal Air Force, passed away in 1941. Linton Hope himself died on December 20, 1920, in the Midhurst area of Sussex, England.

Linton Hope's Work as a Designer

Linton Hope was not just a great sailor; he was also a very skilled designer. He created many different types of yachts. One of his designs was the Fairy One Design, made for the North of Ireland Yacht Club.

He also designed special boats like international canoes, Thames Raters, and Half Raters. Some of these boats were sent all the way to India for yacht clubs in places like Malabar, Nainital, and Rangoon.

The yacht used to win both of his Olympic gold medals was called Scotia. This winning yacht was also designed by Linton Hope himself. Because of his amazing talent, he was even appointed as the naval architect for the King of the Belgians.

During World War I, Linton Hope's design skills were used for something different. In 1915, he designed the AD Flying Boat for the British Admiralty's Air Department. His special hull designs were later used for many British flying boats in the 1920s. This included large aircraft like the Phoenix P.5 Cork and the Fairey Titania. At the time, the Fairey Titania was the biggest flying boat in the world.
