Lipochaeta succulenta |
Lipochaeta succulenta is a special plant known as the seaside nehe. It's a type of flowering plant that grows only in the beautiful Hawaiian Islands. You can find it on all the main islands, except for one called Lanai. This plant is unique because it's endemic to Hawaii, meaning it naturally grows nowhere else in the world!
Meet the Seaside Nehe
The seaside nehe is a plant that grows in clumps. It's a type of subshrub, which means it's smaller than a bush but bigger than a regular plant. It can grow to be about 3 to 4 feet (about 1 meter) tall.
What Does it Look Like?
This plant has stems that spread out and can even grow roots where they touch the ground. Its leaves are shiny green and feel thick and fleshy, like a succulent plant. These leaves are usually about 2 to 5 inches (5 to 13 centimeters) long.
Where Does it Live?
The seaside nehe loves to live near the ocean. You will only find it in coastal areas that are below 300 feet (about 90 meters) in elevation. It's very common in beach areas, especially along the famous Nā Pali coast on the island of Kauai.
