Lisa Pollak is an American journalist and writer. She is famous for winning the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing in 1997.

Becoming a Journalist

Lisa Pollak started writing for newspapers very early. When she was in high school in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, she wrote her first article. It was about a Tu B'Shevat tree planting event for the Detroit Jewish News.

College and Early Career

She went to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. There, she studied American Culture and worked for the student newspaper, The Michigan Daily. After graduating in 1990, she earned a master's degree in journalism. She got this degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in 1992.

After college, Lisa worked as a reporter. From 1992 to 1994, she wrote for The Charlotte Observer. Then, from 1994 to 1996, she worked for The Raleigh News and Observer. In 1995, she won the Ernie Pyle Award for Human Interest Writing for her work there.

Winning the Pulitzer Prize

From 1996 to 2004, Lisa Pollak was a reporter for the Baltimore Sun newspaper. In 1997, she won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing. This is a very important award for journalists.

"The Umpire's Son" Story

She won the Pulitzer Prize for her 1996 Baltimore Sun story called "The Umpire's Son." This story was about the family of baseball umpire John Hirschbeck. His son had passed away from a rare disease called adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). The award recognized her "compelling portrait" of the umpire's family.

Later Work

From 2004 to 2013, Lisa Pollak worked for This American Life. This is a popular radio show and podcast. She was a producer and reporter, helping to create many interesting stories.

Today, Lisa Pollak is an independent journalist. This means she works for herself and takes on different writing projects. She also teaches journalism at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Lisa Pollak is married to another journalist named Chuck Salter.
