Lisieux is a historic town in the northwest of France. It is located in the Calvados department, which is part of the Basse-Normandie region. Lisieux is known for its beautiful buildings and its important religious history. It is a place where many people visit each year.

History of Lisieux
Lisieux has a very long history. It was once the main town for a Celtic tribe called the Lexovii. Later, it became an important Roman town. Over the centuries, Lisieux grew and became a significant center in the region of Normandy.
Lisieux in World War II
During the Second World War, Lisieux suffered a lot of damage. In 1944, during the Battle of Normandy, much of the town was destroyed. However, the people of Lisieux worked hard to rebuild their town. Today, you can still see some of the older buildings that survived.
Religious Importance
Lisieux is famous around the world because of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. She was a young nun who lived in the town. She joined the Carmelite convent when she was only 15 years old. Saint Thérèse is a very important figure in the Catholic Church.
Basilica of Sainte-Thérèse
To honor Saint Thérèse, a large church called the Basilica of Sainte-Thérèse de Lisieux was built. It is one of the biggest churches constructed in France during the 20th century. Many pilgrims, who are people who travel for religious reasons, come to visit the Basilica every year.
Lisieux Cathedral
The town also has a beautiful old church called Lisieux Cathedral. It is a very old building, dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. This cathedral is a great example of Norman Gothic architecture. It shows how buildings were designed many hundreds of years ago.

Château de Saint-Germain-de-Livet
Just outside Lisieux, there is a lovely castle called the Château de Saint-Germain-de-Livet. It is a mix of medieval and Renaissance styles. The castle is surrounded by a moat and beautiful gardens. It's a great place to imagine what life was like long ago.
