Lisman is a small town located in Choctaw County, Alabama, in the United States. In 2020, about 427 people lived there. The town was named after a railroad investor from the 1800s when a nearby train line was being built.

History of Lisman

Fighting for Voting Rights

In 1962, some people in Lisman took part in a federal lawsuit. This lawsuit challenged officials in Choctaw County who were making it very hard for Black citizens to register to vote. Many applications from Black voters were being turned down.

To support the fight for voting rights, famous civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. visited Lisman. He led a rally in the town on April 30, 1966.

Becoming an Official Town

Lisman officially became a town in 1979. This was a big step because it allowed the town to make important improvements. For example, they were able to pave their dirt roads and build a sewer system. These changes helped make life better for the people living there.

Recent Plans for the Town

In 2019, the mayor of Lisman, Jason Ward, had plans to improve the town even more. He wanted to hire a police officer to help keep the community safe. He also planned to rebuild the old school library, which had been left empty.
