Confederate Army Officers

During the American Civil War (1861-1865), the Confederate States of America formed armies to fight against the United States. These armies were made up of many soldiers, led by officers. Officers are leaders who command soldiers and plan battles.

What Was the Confederate Army?

The Confederate Army was the main land military force of the Confederate States. It was created to defend the Southern states that had separated from the United States. Soldiers came from all walks of life, from farmers to lawyers. They joined to fight for their cause.

Regular vs. Provisional Armies

The Confederacy had two main types of armies:

  • Regular Army (ACSA): This was the smaller, professional part of the army. It was meant to be a permanent military force, similar to how countries have standing armies today. Officers in the Regular Army were career soldiers.
  • Provisional Army (PACS): This was the much larger part of the Confederate military. It was formed for the specific purpose of fighting the war. Most soldiers and officers who served during the American Civil War were part of the Provisional Army. Many officers from the Regular Army also served in the Provisional Army, often with higher ranks.
