Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Pokémon Adventures, known in Japan as Pocket Monsters Special (ポケットモンスター SPECIAL, Poketto Monsutā SPECIAL), is a super popular Japanese manga series. It's like a comic book that tells stories based on most of the Pokémon video games made by Nintendo. Because of this, the main characters in the manga often have the same names as the main characters in the games!

Sometimes, there are small delays in releasing new chapters. This happens because the people who write and draw the manga need to see the new Pokémon games first. They want to make sure the story in the manga matches the games perfectly!

The series is written by Hidenori Kusaka. The artwork was done by Mato for the first nine books. After that, Satoshi Yamamoto took over drawing from the tenth book onwards. The Japanese publisher, Shogakukan, started releasing the individual chapters in special book formats called tankōbon on August 8, 1997. This page will tell you all about volumes 41 to 60, which came out between 2012 and recently.

In the United States, a company called Viz Media publishes the English versions of Pokémon Adventures. Viz first released the manga in tankōbon style from July 6, 2000, to January 2003. They also put out some special "Best of" books in 2006. Then, on June 1, 2009, Viz started publishing the tankōbon volumes again, covering all the stories that came after the first ones. Volumes 41-60 cover exciting adventures from the HeartGold/SoulSilver games all the way through most of the X/Y chapters.

Gold joins the Pokéathlon and wins all five events! He's supposed to be there for something serious, but he gets sidetracked. Silver goes to the new Johto Safari Zone to learn about some mysterious Plates. He meets Crystal, who is on a field trip, and they work together.

Silver and Crystal face off against the Team Rocket Generals. These bad guys have brought Team Rocket back to life and want to catch Arceus, a very powerful Pokémon. Arceus appears, and the Generals try to make Crystal catch it, but she fails. Arceus then destroys the Ecruteak Gym! Gold chases Arceus to the Ruins of Alph. Silver and Crystal join him, and Arceus takes them all to the Sinjoh Ruins. There, the Generals force Arceus to create Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina!

Mini-Volumes: Smaller Books for Faster Reads

For a while, the Black 2/White 2 story took a long break (from 2013 to 2020). Because of this, the regular tankōbon books also stopped being published. To keep fans happy, Viz Media started releasing smaller books called mini-volumes for the X/Y, Sun/Moon, and Sword/Shield stories.

These mini-volumes were about half the size of the regular books, with 2-4 chapters instead of 6-12. This meant they could be released more often! They put out 12 mini-volumes for the X/Y, Sun/Moon, and Sword/Shield stories, and 6 for the Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire story. The regular tankōbon books for the X/Y story finally started coming out in America in early 2022.
