List of RAF aircrew in the Battle of Britain (L–N) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The following is a list of brave pilots and other aircrew who flew during the Battle of Britain. These airmen were given the Battle of Britain Clasp medal because they flew at least one official mission with an eligible Royal Air Force (RAF) or Fleet Air Arm unit between July 10 and October 31, 1940. This was a very important time during World War II when Britain defended its skies against attacks.

The Story Behind "The Few"

In 1942, the Air Ministry decided to create a special list. This list would include the names of pilots who had died fighting during the Battle of Britain. The goal was to build a national memorial for them. This memorial became the Battle of Britain Chapel inside Westminster Abbey. King George VI officially opened it on July 10, 1947. The Roll of Honour in the Chapel has the names of 1,497 pilots and aircrew who were killed or badly wounded during the battle.

For a while, there was no official rule about who counted as a Battle of Britain airman. But on November 9, 1960, the Air Ministry published a document called AMO N850. This document finally set the rules for who could receive the Battle of Britain Star medal. It also listed the 71 units that were part of RAF Fighter Command during the battle.

In 1955, a serving RAF officer named Flt Lt John Holloway started his own project. He wanted to make a complete list of all the airmen known as "The Few." After 14 years of hard work and research, Flt Lt Holloway had 2,946 names on his list. Out of these airmen, 537 were killed during the battle or later died from their injuries.

The Battle of Britain Memorial at Capel-le-Ferne

The Battle of Britain Memorial Trust was started by Geoffrey Page. This group raised money to build another memorial. This one is the Battle of Britain Memorial at Capel-le-Ferne in Kent. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother unveiled this memorial on July 9, 1993. At this site, there is also the Christopher Foxley-Norris Memorial Wall. On this wall, you can find the complete list of all "The Few" engraved.

More recently, the Battle of Britain Monument was built in London. It stands on the Victoria Embankment. Charles, Prince of Wales and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall unveiled it on September 18, 2005. The idea for this monument came from the Battle of Britain Historical Society. They worked to raise the money needed to build it. The outside of the monument has bronze plaques. These plaques list all the Allied airmen who took part in the Battle of Britain.
