- Bilbo Baggins: He is the main character of the story and a hobbit from Bag End. The whole adventure starts with him!

- Belladonna Took: Bilbo's mother. (Only mentioned in the story)
- The Old Took: Bilbo's grandfather on his mother's side. (Only mentioned in the story)
- The Sackville-Bagginses: These are Bilbo's cousins who really wanted to take over his home, Bag End.
- Bullroarer Took: A famous hobbit from history. He was known for being very big and strong! (Only mentioned in the story)
Wizards
- Gandalf: He is a powerful wizard who plans the whole adventure for Bilbo and the dwarves. He helps them a lot along the way.
- Radagast: Another wizard, mentioned as a friend of Gandalf. (Only mentioned in the story)
Dwarves
- Thrain the Old: An ancestor of Thorin. He was the first King under the Mountain and found the special Arkenstone. (Only mentioned in the story)
- Thror: Thorin's grandfather. He was King under the Mountain when the dragon Smaug took it over. (Only mentioned in the story)

Thorin's Company
Thorin's Company was made up of thirteen dwarves. Their main goal in The Hobbit was to get back their treasure and home, the Lonely Mountain, from the dragon Smaug. Bilbo Baggins and sometimes Gandalf joined them on this quest.
- The Royal House of Durin:
- Thorin Oakenshield: He is the leader of the Company. He is also the rightful king of the Lonely Mountain. Thorin had the longest beard and wore a blue hood.
- Fili and Kili: These are Thorin's nephews. They were the youngest dwarves in the group. They had great eyesight and wore blue hoods.
- Four of Thorin's cousins:
- Balin: He was Dwalin's older brother. Balin had a white beard and wore a red hood. He became good friends with Bilbo.
- Dwalin: Balin's younger brother. He wore a dark green hood and had a blue beard. He was the first dwarf Bilbo met.
- Oin: Gloin's brother. He wore a brown hood. Oin and Gloin were in charge of making the campfires.
- Gloin: Oin's brother. He wore a white hood. Gloin was not sure about Bilbo at the start of the journey. (Gloin is the father of Gimli, a character in The Lord of the Rings.)
- Three dwarves who were distant relatives of Thorin:
- Dori: He wore a purple hood. Dori helped carry Bilbo in the goblin tunnels.
- Nori: He also wore a purple hood.
- Ori: He wore a grey hood.
- Three dwarves from Moria:
- Bifur: Cousin to Bofur and Bombur. He wore a yellow hood.
- Bofur: Brother to Bombur and cousin to Bifur. He wore a yellow hood.
- Bombur: Brother to Bofur and cousin to Bifur. He was known for being very large and kind to Bilbo. He wore a pale green hood.
Elves
- Elrond: He is the wise master of Rivendell, a beautiful hidden valley. He is known as a friend to both elves and humans.
- The Elvenking: He is the king of the Mirkwood Elves. He kept the dwarves as prisoners for a while. Bilbo helped them escape. (His name, Thranduil, is given in The Lord of the Rings.)
- Galion: He was the butler in the Elvenking's halls. His love for wine helped Bilbo and the dwarves escape.
Men
- Bard the Bowman: A skilled archer from Lake-town. He was the one who bravely killed the dragon Smaug.
- Beorn: He is a "skin-changer" who can turn into a bear. He lives near the Carrock. Beorn helped fight against the goblins in the Battle of Five Armies.
- Girion: He was the Lord of Dale before Smaug destroyed it. His family managed to escape. (Only mentioned in the story)
- The Master of Lake-town: A greedy leader who took money from his own people. He ended up losing everything after Lake-town was destroyed. He was sometimes called "Moneybags."
Trolls
- Tom: One of three trolls who captured the Company. They argued about how to cook their captives until the sun turned them to stone.
- Bert: Another one of the three trolls who captured the Company.
- William (Bill Huggins): The third troll who captured the Company.
Other Characters
- Gollum: A strange creature who lived deep under the Misty Mountains. He lost his magic ring, which Bilbo found. Gollum played a riddle game with Bilbo. In The Lord of the Rings, we learn he was once a hobbit named Sméagol.
- The Necromancer: A shadowy evil character mentioned in The Hobbit. In The Lord of the Rings, this character is revealed to be Sauron. (Only mentioned in the story)
- Smaug: A huge and powerful dragon who lived in the Lonely Mountain. He destroyed Lake-town after the dwarves woke him up. Bard the Bowman eventually killed him.
Birds
- The Lord of the Eagles: A giant eagle who, along with other eagles, saved the Company from goblins. He also helped the good side in the Battle of Five Armies.
- Carc: A smart raven who lived near the Lonely Mountain a long time ago. (Only mentioned in the story)
- Roäc: Carc's son and the leader of the big ravens of the Lonely Mountain. He helped carry messages.
- The thrush: A bird whose knocking showed the secret keyhole to the Lonely Mountain. It also carried news about Smaug to Bard.
Goblins
- Azog: Bolg's father. He killed Thorin's grandfather, Thror. (Only mentioned in the story)
- Bolg: He took over from the Great Goblin. Bolg led a large army of goblins in the Battle of Five Armies.
- Golfimbul: The king of the goblins from Mount Gram. He was defeated by Bullroarer Took in a battle. (Only mentioned in the story)
- The Great Goblin: The king of the goblins living under the Misty Mountains. His warriors captured the Company. Gandalf defeated the Great Goblin when he rescued the Company.
