Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Waterloo Road is a popular British TV show about a school. It first aired in the UK from 2006 to 2015. Later, a new version of the show started in 2023.

About the Show

The show is set in a school called Waterloo Road. It follows the lives of the students and teachers. The first episodes were filmed in Rochdale, England. Later, the show moved its filming to Greenock, Scotland, for series eight to ten. The new series, which started in 2023, is filmed back in Greater Manchester. Specifically, it's filmed at a former school in Swinton.

The Original Series

The first run of Waterloo Road had ten series. There were 200 episodes in total. Each episode was about an hour long.

  • The first series had eight episodes.
  • The second series had twelve episodes.
  • From series three to series seven, there were twenty episodes per series.
  • Series seven then increased to thirty episodes.
  • When the show moved to Scotland, series eight and nine had fifty episodes combined.
  • Another twenty episodes were made for series ten.

Most episodes first aired on BBC One. They were usually shown at 8 pm. The show first aired on Thursdays, then moved to Wednesdays. The last ten episodes were shown on BBC Three first. They were then repeated on BBC One later. This change allowed new shows to be broadcast on BBC One.

Waterloo Road was stopped in 2014. BBC bosses felt the show had run its course. The original series ended in March 2015.

Waterloo Road Reunited

In 2010, a short online show was made. It was called Waterloo Road Reunited. It had six episodes and came out in 2011. This spin-off focused on six students who had left the main school.

The Show Returns

In September 2021, the BBC announced a new series. This was part of a plan to show more of Britain in its programmes.

The new series started on January 3, 2023. It took the place of Holby City on Tuesdays at 8 pm. The first seven episodes were also available to watch online. You could watch them all at once on BBC iPlayer.
