List of awards and nominations received by Wicked (musical) facts for kids
Wicked is a super popular musical with amazing music and songs by Stephen Schwartz. The story was written by Winnie Holzman. It's based on a book called Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, which tells a different side of the classic story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and the movie The Wizard of Oz.
Even though some early reviews were mixed, Wicked quickly became a huge hit with audiences! The show started on Broadway in New York City and then spread all over the world. There have been productions in big cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, and London's West End. It also played in Japan, Germany, and Australia, and has had many tours across North America.
Wicked celebrated its 20th birthday on October 30, 2023. It's now the 4th longest-running Broadway show ever! This means it has been performed more times than almost any other musical in Broadway history. The show has also broken many box office records, earning more money in ticket sales than other shows in New York, London, and other cities.
The original Broadway show was nominated for ten Tony Awards in 2004, which are like the Oscars for theater. It won three of them, including Best Actress in a Musical for Idina Menzel, who played Elphaba. It also won six Drama Desk Awards and a Grammy Award for its music. The London show has also been nominated for and won many awards.
