Understanding Belarusian Cities
When we talk about cities and towns in Belarus, you might see different names for the same place. This is because Belarus has its own language, Belarusian, and also uses Russian. Sometimes, you'll see names written in a special way called Łacinka, which uses Latin letters for Belarusian words.
Cities and towns in Belarus are also divided by their "status."
- An Oblast is like a large region or province, and the main city in that region is called an oblast-subordinate city. These are usually the biggest and most important cities.
- A Raion is a smaller administrative area, similar to a county. Towns within these areas are called raion-subordinate towns.
