In Morocco, the smallest local government area is called a commune. In 2014, Morocco had 1,538 communes. About 256 of these were 'urban' communes, also known as municipalities. The other 1,282 were 'rural' communes. The High Commission for Planning (a government group) also identified some 'urban centers' within rural communes.

The High Commission for Planning also shared the official populations for seven big Moroccan cities. Some of these cities are made up of more than one local area. These numbers are included in the list, and we'll explain how these cities are defined in the notes.
