Imagine each of India's 28 states having a special leader who represents the country's President. That's what a Governor is! In the Republic of India, a Governor is the official head of each state. They are like a link between the state government and the central government of India.

The President of India chooses the Governor for each state. A Governor usually serves for five years. They hold a very important position, ranking high in the country's official order.

Understanding the Governor's Role

Even though the Governor is the official head of the state government, they mostly follow the advice of the elected leaders. These elected leaders are called the Chief Minister and their council of ministers. So, while the Governor signs off on decisions, the Chief Minister and their team are the ones who actually run the state day-to-day.

This setup is similar to how the President and the Prime Minister work at the national level. The President is the official head, but the Prime Minister and their cabinet make most of the decisions.

What Does a Governor Do?

Governors have several important jobs. They officially appoint the Chief Minister and other ministers in the state. They also make sure that the state government follows the rules of the Indian Constitution.

Sometimes, a Governor might need to send a bill (a proposed law) to the President for approval. They can also recommend special rules, known as 'President's Rule,' if a state government cannot function properly according to the Constitution.

Who are the Governors?

India has 28 states, and each one has its own Governor. These individuals come from different backgrounds and have served the country in various ways. For example, Acharya Devvrat is the Governor of Gujarat and has been serving for a long time. Sometimes, a Governor might even look after two states at once if needed.
