Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Canada has a rich history, and part of that history involves amazing trains! Heritage railways are special train lines that keep old trains and tracks working. They let us experience what train travel was like a long time ago. Sometimes, these railways even include old streetcars, called tramways, which are like buses on tracks. Regular Trains with a Historic Touch

While these are not considered heritage railways, three passenger train services use equipment built a long time ago, some even from the 1960s or earlier!

  • Ontario Northland Railway runs a passenger service between Cochrane and Moosonee. They use a fleet of trains that have a lot of historical value.
  • Via Rail Canada uses equipment that dates back as far as 1947 on all its routes. A great example is the special Park cars built by Canadian Pacific Railway. You can find these on trains like The Canadian, The Ocean, the Jasper-Prince Rupert train, and the Winnipeg-Churchill train. To show how historic these cars are, one of them is even on display at the Canadian Railway Museum in Saint-Constant, Quebec. Via Rail also still uses RDCs on the Sudbury-White River train in Ontario.
  • The Tshiuetin Railway in Labrador operates a collection of vintage passenger cars for its regular service.
