Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Welcome to the amazing islands around the Isle of Man! The Isle of Man, also known as Ellan Vannin in the Manx language, is a special place in the middle of the Irish Sea. It's not part of the United Kingdom, but it's a territory that the UK is responsible for. This kind of place is called a Crown dependency.

The Isle of Man is surrounded by several smaller islands. Only two of these islands have people living on them. Two other islands are connected to the main Isle of Man by special roads called causeways.

The Isle of Man is the largest island in its group. It is home to most of the people who live in this special territory. The other islands are much smaller, and some are not even connected to the main island.

Main Islands You Should Know

Here are the most important islands that are part of the Isle of Man's territory:

  • Isle of Man (Ellan Vannin): This is the biggest island. In 2006, about 80,056 people lived here. It's the heart of the Crown dependency.
  • Calf of Man (Yn Cholloo): This island is located just off the southwest coast of the main Isle of Man. It's much smaller and had only 2 people living there in 2006. It's famous for its wildlife and is often visited by nature lovers.

  • St Michael's Isle (Ellan Noo Mael or Ynnys Vaayl): Also known as Fort Island, this island is connected to the main Isle of Man by a causeway. A causeway is like a bridge that connects land over water. This island has a historic fort on it.
  • St Patrick's Isle (Ellan Noo Perick): This island is also connected to the mainland by a causeway. It's home to Peel Castle, a very old and interesting historical site.

Tiny Islands: The Islets

Besides the main islands, there are also some very small islands called islets. These are usually too small for people to live on.

  • Kitterland (Famman Kitterland): This is a small islet located very close to the Calf of Man.
  • St Mary's Isle (Kione y Sker or Creg Voirrey): Also known as Conister Rock, this islet is famous for its "Tower of Refuge." This tower was built to help sailors who might get shipwrecked on the rocks.
  • Chicken Rock (Carrick ny Kirkey): This is a small, rocky islet with a lighthouse on it. It's known for being a dangerous spot for ships, which is why the lighthouse is so important.

Islands That Changed Over Time

Some areas that were once islands are now connected to the mainland due to natural changes over thousands of years.

  • Langness Peninsula: This area is now a peninsula, meaning it's connected to the mainland on one side and surrounded by water on the others. However, in prehistoric times, it was a separate island. Today, about 30 people live there.
