List of mayors of Garden City, Georgia facts for kids
Garden City, Georgia became an official city on February 8, 1939. This means it was formally recognized as a city with its own local government.
Garden City uses a special way of governing called a council-administrator system. In this system, the city council makes the big decisions, and a professional city administrator handles the daily running of the city.
By 2011, the city council will have one mayor and five council members. Each council member will represent a different part of the city. The current mayor is Tennyson Holder. He was re-elected to the city council in 2009 and then chosen by his fellow council members to be mayor.
It's interesting to know that as of 2010, Garden City has never collected property taxes from its residents.
City Council Meetings
The city council holds its meetings on the first and third Mondays of every month at 7:00 p.m. These meetings are where important decisions about the city are made.
Over the years, the council meetings have been held in different places:
- Garden City Community House, 78 Varnedoe Avenue, from 1951 to 1963
- Garden City City Hall, 100 Main Street, from 1963 to 2009
- Garden City Town Center, 100 Central Avenue, since 2009
Mayors of Garden City
The mayor is the leader of the city council. They help guide the meetings and represent the city.
Before 2003, mayors and council members were elected for two-year terms. This means they served for two years before needing to be re-elected. In 2003, a new system was started where they serve four-year terms. These terms are "staggered," meaning not everyone is up for election at the same time. This helps keep some experienced leaders on the council.
Many people have served as mayor of Garden City since it became a city. For example, Edgar C. Pipkin was the first mayor, serving multiple terms starting in 1939. More recently, Anthony "Andy" Quinney served as mayor from 2002 to 2009, followed by the current mayor, Tennyson Holder.
