Kids Encyclopedia Facts

This article lists characters who were created especially for Peter Jackson's movie series based on J. R. R. Tolkien's book The Hobbit. These characters were not in the original book but were added to the films.

Humans in the Films

Alfrid Lickspittle (played by Ryan Gage) is a sneaky and selfish helper. He worked for the leader of Esgaroth, also known as Lake-town. Alfrid was known for being a coward and only caring about himself.

Betsy Butterbur is related to a character named Barliman Butterbur from The Lord of the Rings movies. She appears as a barmaid, someone who serves drinks, at an inn called The Prancing Pony. This happens in the beginning of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Betsy is played by Katie Jackson, who is Peter Jackson's daughter.

  • Richard Whiteside plays Butterbur Sr.

Bill Ferny was a character who worked for the wizard Saruman in The Lord of the Rings books. He was not in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies. However, Bill Ferny's father appears in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. He is a bad guy hired by Azog to try and stop Thorin Oakenshield at the Prancing Pony inn. Dallas Barnett plays him.

  • A Squint-Eyed Southerner is seen with Bill Ferny at the Prancing Pony. This character is played by New Zealand actor Matt Smith.

Braga (played by Michael Mitchinson) is the leader of the Lake-town Guard. In the book, Bard held this role. Braga, like the Master and Alfrid, did not care much about the regular people of Lake-town.

Hilda Bianca (played by Sarah Peirse) is a woman from Lake-town. She was one of the first people to see the dwarves when Bard led them through the city.

Percy (played by Nick Blake) is the gatekeeper of Lake-town. He is also a friend of Bard.

Tilda and Sigrid (played by Mary and Peggy Nesbitt) are the daughters of Bard the Bowman. In Tolkien's original stories, Bard only had one known child, a son named Bain.

Elves in the Films

Tauriel (played by Evangeline Lilly) is a female Elf from the forest of Mirkwood. She is the Chief of the Guards for the Elvenking, Thranduil. The movies also show a romantic story between Tauriel and the dwarf Kili.

Elros (played by Robin Kerr) is an Elf from the Woodland Realm. He appears in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Elros is a captain of the Woodland Guard and also the Keeper of the Keys.

Feren (played by Simon London) is another Elf from the Woodland Realm. He serves as one of Thranduil's main assistants during the Battle of the Five Armies.

Hobbits in the Films

Fredegar Bolger is a hobbit who is a friend of Frodo Baggins. He was not included in the film version of The Fellowship of the Ring. A character with the same name and a similar appearance shows up at the end of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. He buys some of Bilbo's furniture at an auction.

Fredegar Chubb (played by Eric Vespe) is a Hobbit who sells Bilbo a fish. This scene is in the extended edition of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Eric Vespe was actually a reporter visiting the movie set. He was asked to be an extra and then given a small speaking part.

Master Worrywort (played by Timothy Bartlett) is a hobbit from the Shire. He is a neighbor of Bilbo Baggins.

Orcs in the Films

Fimbul (played by Stephen Ure) is an Orc who rides a Warg, a type of wolf-like creature. He is one of Yazneg's Orcs.

Grinnah (played by Stephen Ure) is the goblin who introduces the Dwarves to the Great Goblin. He also searches their belongings. Kili kills him when the dwarves and Gandalf escape.

Narzug (played by Ben Mitchell) is one of Azog's Hunter Orcs. He is captured by Legolas and Tauriel in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. He is taken to the Elvenking's halls, where Thranduil kills him after questioning.

Ragash is an Orc who tells Azog that the army is ready to attack the next morning. This happens in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Allan Smith plays Ragash, and Martin Kwok provides his voice.

Yazneg (played by John Rawls) is a fierce Orc leader. He is second-in-command of Azog's hunting group in An Unexpected Journey. He finds Thorin's Company camping at night and leads the attack against them. Azog kills him on Weathertop.

The goblin scribe (played by Kiran Shah) is a very small goblin. He has a short appearance as a writer and messenger for the Great Goblin in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

The Keeper of the Dungeons (played by Conan Stevens) is a large, heavily armored Orc. He appears briefly in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and again in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. He is first seen among the Orc army during the Battle of Azanulbizar. Later, he appears in Dol Guldur, where he hurts the captured Gandalf for entering his master's fortress. In the extended edition, he questions Gandalf about the Elven Rings of Power.
