The President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands is a very important leader. This person is both the head of state and the head of government for the Marshall Islands. Think of them as the main leader of the country.
The President is chosen by the Nitijeļā, which is like the country's parliament. The President then picks other leaders from the Nitijeļā to form a team called the cabinet.
Amata Kabua was the first President of the Marshall Islands, elected in 1979. He was re-elected several times. After he passed away, his cousin, Imata Kabua, became President. Later, Casten Nemra was elected in 2016, but was replaced by Hilda Heine just one week later. The current President is Hilda Heine.
