David Kabua (born May 26, 1951, died April 8, 2026) was an important leader from the Marshall Islands. He served as the President of the Marshall Islands from 2020 to 2024. Before becoming President, he represented Wotho Atoll in the country's parliament (called the Legislature) starting in 2008. He also worked as the Minister of Health and Minister of Internal Affairs.

David Kabua: A Leader for the Marshall Islands
Early Life and Education
David Kabua was born in Majuro on May 26, 1951. His father, Amata Kabua, was the very first President of the Marshall Islands. His mother was Emlain Kabua.
He went to Xavier High School in Chuuk State and later studied at the University of Hawaii. After his studies, he worked in different roles. He was a teacher's helper and helped students connect with their schools. He also managed the Marshall Islands Development Authority, which helps the country grow.
For four years, he served as a diplomat, representing the Marshall Islands in Orange County, California, USA. He also ran his own business for ten years.
Journey into Politics
David Kabua began his political career in 2007. He was elected to the Legislature of the Marshall Islands to represent Wotho Atoll. He was re-elected in 2011.
During his second term, he served as the Minister of Health from 2012 to 2013. In 2014, he became the Minister of Internal Affairs. He was elected again in 2015. In January 2016, he served as a special helper to the President, called the Minister in Assistance to the President, in the cabinet of Casten Nemra.
Becoming President
In the 2019 general election, David Kabua was re-elected to represent Wotho Atoll. On January 6, 2020, the country's parliament chose him to be the President of the Marshall Islands. He won with 20 votes.
He took over from Hilda Heine, who had also wanted to be President again.

As President, David Kabua focused on important issues for his country. He worked to fight climate change, which is a big problem for island nations like the Marshall Islands. He also talked with the United States about important agreements. He addressed the issue of Runit Dome, a place that needed special attention.
News reports described him as a balanced leader. He continued the Marshall Islands' friendship with Taiwan.
In September 2020, he wrote a public letter to a newspaper, The Guardian. In this letter, he warned the world about the dangers of climate change. He explained that rising sea levels could make his country disappear.
On January 3, 2024, Hilda Heine became President again, taking over from David Kabua.
