The President is chosen by the Nitijeļā, which is like their parliament. The President then picks other leaders, called cabinet members, from the Nitijeļā to help run the country.
Amata Kabua was the first President of the Marshall Islands. He was elected in 1979 and served for many years. After him, other presidents have led the country. For example, Casten Nemra was briefly president in 2016, but then Hilda Heine took over. David Kabua, who is Amata Kabua's son, also served as president. The current President is Hilda Heine, who started her term on January 3, 2024.
