The Speaker of the House of Representatives of Thailand is a very important person in the Thai government. Think of them as the main leader or "referee" of the House of Representatives. This is the part of Thailand's parliament where elected members (called MPs) discuss and make laws.
The Speaker's main job is to make sure that all meetings and discussions in the House run smoothly and fairly. They also lead the entire National Assembly of Thailand. The Speaker is usually an MP from the political party that has the most members in the House. They are chosen by a vote at the start of a new House session, and there's no limit to how many times they can be chosen.
History of the Speaker's Role
The role of the Speaker was created in 1932. This was when Thailand first set up its modern parliament. The very first person to hold this important position was Chaophraya Thammasakmontri. Back then, the role was called the "President of the People's Assembly of Siam."
What the Speaker Does
The Speaker has many important duties. Their main job is to make sure that all the rules for making laws are followed correctly. They have two helpers called Deputy Speakers. It's super important for the Speaker and their deputies to be fair to everyone. They cannot be part of any political party's main group, so they can make unbiased decisions.
Here are some of their key responsibilities:
- They help fill empty spots for MPs who were chosen from party lists.
- They officially tell the King who the new Prime Minister will be.
- They also officially confirm the King's choice for the Leader of the Opposition.
- They are automatically part of special committees that choose important judges and officials. These include judges for the Constitutional Court and members of the Election Commission. They also help choose Ombudsmen and members of the National Anti-Corruption Commission.
