Oakland, California, is a city in the United States. It has many tall buildings, called high-rises. Most of these are in the city's downtown area. Oakland has about 30 buildings that are taller than 200 feet (61 meters). The very tallest building in Oakland is the Ordway Building. It has 28 stories and stands 404 feet (123 meters) high.

History of Oakland's Tall Buildings
The story of tall buildings in Oakland began in 1907. That's when the nine-story Bank of America Building was finished. It was the tallest building in the city for a while.
Then, in 1914, the Oakland City Hall became the tallest. It was 320 feet (98 meters) tall. When it was built, it was special! It was the first tall government building in the United States. It was also the tallest building west of the Mississippi River.
In 1960, the Kaiser Center took over as the tallest. It reached 390 feet (119 meters). It held this record for ten years. Finally, in 1989, the Ordway Building became the tallest. It has been the tallest building in Oakland ever since.
As of 2022, a new skyscraper is being built at 1900 Broadway. It will have 36 stories and be 395 feet (120 meters) tall.
