History of Oakland's Tall Buildings

The story of tall buildings in Oakland began in 1907. That's when the nine-story Bank of America Building was finished. It was the tallest building in the city for a while.

Then, in 1914, the Oakland City Hall became the tallest. It was 320 feet (98 meters) tall. When it was built, it was special! It was the first tall government building in the United States. It was also the tallest building west of the Mississippi River.

In 1960, the Kaiser Center took over as the tallest. It reached 390 feet (119 meters). It held this record for ten years. Finally, in 1989, the Ordway Building became the tallest. It has been the tallest building in Oakland ever since.

As of 2022, a new skyscraper is being built at 1900 Broadway. It will have 36 stories and be 395 feet (120 meters) tall.

Oakland's Tallest Buildings List

This list shows buildings in Oakland that are at least 200 feet (61 meters) tall. We measure their height from the ground to the very top, including spires or cool architectural parts. We don't count antenna masts. Buildings that are already built are included. If you see an equal sign (=) next to a rank, it means two or more buildings are the same height. A dash (—) means we don't have that information. The "Year" column shows when the building was finished.
