History of Listowel Castle
Early Days and Rebellions
Listowel Castle was built in the 15th century, which means the 1400s. It was a very strong fort. It became famous during a big fight called the First Desmond Rebellion. This was a time when Irish lords fought against the English rule of Queen Elizabeth I.
Listowel Castle was the very last stronghold of a powerful Irish family called the Geraldines. It was their final place to defend. The castle was attacked by English forces led by Sir Charles Wilmot. After being surrounded for 28 days, the castle was finally taken on November 5, 1568.
Changing Owners and Restoration
After these events, the castle eventually became the property of the Hare family. They held the title of Earl of Listowel. Before them, it belonged to the Fitzmaurices, who were known as the Knights of Kerry.
In 2005, important work began to fix up the castle. The Office of Public Works helped with this project. Skilled workers cleaned the old stone walls. They also repaired the top part of the castle, which was very old and worn out. This made sure the castle was strong and waterproof again. A new staircase was also added outside. This staircase looks like it belongs with the old castle. It helps visitors get to the upper floors safely.

Experts have studied the castle's old records and dug up parts of the site. They believe that Listowel Castle originally looked a lot like Bunratty Castle in County Clare.
