The Litoria viranula is a type of frog that lives in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. It is a close relative of the Litoria bicolor.

What Does It Look Like?

Adult male Litoria viranula frogs are about 2.4 centimeters (about 1 inch) long. Female frogs are a little bit bigger, around 2.6 centimeters long. Their heads are longer than they are wide. Their eyes have pupils that open up and down.

The front feet of this frog usually have almost no webbing between the toes. However, their back feet have a lot of webbing. This frog is bright green. It also has a bronze-colored stripe on its back. You might notice darker patches on its legs and in the middle of its body.

Where Does It Live?

This frog lives in forests. You can find it near the Digul River and the Fly River. These rivers are located in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia.

Reproduction and Life Cycle

Litoria viranula frogs lay their eggs in water. They choose places where the water is flowing. They also lay eggs in areas that are only flooded for a short time.

What's in a Name?

The scientific name for this frog, viranula, comes from two Latin words. The word viridis means green. The word ranula means frog. So, its name basically means "green frog"!
