Litsea australis, also known as the brown bollygum or brown bollywood, is a type of tree that grows in rainforests. It belongs to the laurel family, just like the bay laurel plant. You can find this tree in eastern Australia.
The name australis means "southern." This tree was once thought to be a different species, Litsea leefeana. But in 1989, a rainforest expert named Bernie Hyland studied it again and gave it its current name.
Brown bollygum trees grow in many kinds of rainforests. They are often found close to the ocean. You can see them from Forster, New South Wales in the south all the way up to Fraser Island in Queensland.
What Does the Brown Bollygum Look Like?
The brown bollygum is a small to medium-sized tree. It can grow up to 20 metres (about 65 feet) tall. Larger trees sometimes have wide, strong bases called buttresses.
Its bark is rough and uneven, with a reddish-brown colour. New branches and leaves are covered in soft hairs. The leaves are shaped like an oval, called elliptical. They grow one after another along the stem. Each leaf is usually 8 to 13 centimetres (about 3 to 5 inches) long. Sometimes, they can be as long as 20 centimetres. The tip of the leaf is usually blunt, not pointy. The underside of the leaf is green and has brown hairs. The stalks that hold the leaves are about 8 to 15 millimetres long. You can easily see the veins on both sides of the leaves.
Tiny green or cream-coloured flowers appear from January to June. Interestingly, male and female flowers grow on separate trees. The fruit is a black, fleshy fruit called a drupe. Many different rainforest birds enjoy eating these fruits.
A Home and Food for Animals
The brown bollygum tree is an important food source for many animals. Butterfly larvae (caterpillars) and birds use this plant for their meals.
Some of the animals that rely on this tree include:
- The wompoo fruit dove
- The rose-crowned fruit dove
- The caterpillars of the purple moonbeam butterfly
- The caterpillars of the blue triangle butterfly
