Little Allen Lake, also known as petit lac Allen in French, is a beautiful lake located in Haliburton County, Ontario, Canada. It is found in the municipality of Dysart et al. This lake is important because it is where Allen Creek begins. The water from Little Allen Lake eventually flows into the Ottawa River through a large system of rivers and streams called a drainage basin.
About Little Allen Lake
Little Allen Lake covers an area of about 12.60 hectares (31.1 acres). To give you an idea, that's like 31 football fields! The lake sits at an elevation of 450 metres (1,480 ft) above sea level. It is about 650 metres (2,130 ft) long and 520 metres (1,710 ft) wide.
Where the Water Flows
This lake is located at a special spot called a height of land. This means it's on a ridge where water flows in different directions. From Little Allen Lake, water flows north and east into the Ottawa River drainage basin. However, water on the other side of this ridge would flow west and south into the Trent River drainage basin.
Little Allen Lake does not have any rivers or streams flowing into it. It is mainly fed by rainfall and groundwater. The main river flowing out of the lake is Allen Creek, which starts at the northern end of the lake. Allen Creek then flows into Benoir Lake, and from there, its waters join the York River. The York River then flows into the Madawaska River, which finally empties into the Ottawa River.
The closest town to Little Allen Lake is Pusey. It is about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) south of the lake, just across the border in the nearby municipality of Highlands East.
