The Little Iroquois River is a small river in New Brunswick, Canada. It's like a smaller stream that flows into a bigger river. This bigger river is called the Iroquois River.

The Little Iroquois River flows through the Notre Dame Mountains in Madawaska County. It's located in the northwest part of New Brunswick. This river generally flows south through a forest area. It runs somewhat parallel to the Iroquois River on its west side. It also runs parallel to the Green River (Saint John River) on its east side.

Eventually, the Little Iroquois River joins the Iroquois River. The Iroquois River then flows into the Saint John River (Bay of Fundy). The Saint John River is a much larger river that empties into the Bay of Fundy. The Bay of Fundy then connects to the huge Atlantic Ocean.

River's Journey

Where the River Starts

The Little Iroquois River begins as a mountain stream. It starts high up, about 394 meters (1,293 feet) above sea level. This starting point is in Madawaska County, New Brunswick.

Its source is located:

  • About 3.4 kilometers (2.1 miles) southwest of "First Lake." This lake is the beginning of the Green River (Saint John River) system.
  • About 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) east of the border between Quebec and New Brunswick.
  • About 27.1 kilometers (16.8 miles) northeast of Edmundston, a city in New Brunswick.
  • About 23.1 kilometers (14.4 miles) northeast of Dégelis, a village in Quebec.

How the River Flows

From its source, the Little Iroquois River travels about 20.3 kilometers (12.6 miles). Here's how it flows:

  • It flows south for about 5.2 kilometers (3.2 miles) until it reaches a forest road bridge.
  • Then, it turns southwest and flows for another 5.3 kilometers (3.3 miles) to another forest road bridge.
  • Finally, it flows south for about 9.8 kilometers (6.1 miles). It passes through an area called Bossé in Madawaska County. This part of its journey ends where it meets the Iroquois River.

Where the River Ends

The Little Iroquois River joins the Iroquois River on its east bank. This meeting point is:

  • About 20.0 kilometers (12.4 miles) upstream from where the Iroquois River itself joins the Saint John River.
  • About 4.8 kilometers (3.0 miles) northeast of the village of Saint-Jacques Parish, New Brunswick.
  • About 10.5 kilometers (6.5 miles) north of the city of Edmundston.

What's in a Name?

The name "Little Iroquois River" comes from the fact that it flows into the larger "Iroquois River." So, it's like the smaller version of the Iroquois River.
