Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park is a super cool place in Logan County, Kansas. It's like stepping onto another planet with its unique white rock formations! This special park is owned by The Nature Conservancy, a group that helps protect nature. It's located about 25 miles (40 km) from both Oakley and Scott City.

What Makes Little Jerusalem Special?

This amazing state park covers 330 acres (134 hectares) of land. About 220 acres (89 hectares) of it are covered in what are called "badlands." These badlands are made of Smoky Hill Chalk, a type of soft, white rock.

Why Is It Called "Little Jerusalem"?

The park gets its name because the white rock formations look like tall walls and narrow, winding streets. People think they look a lot like the ancient city of Jerusalem. Imagine walking through a maze of white rock canyons!

The Smoky Hill Chalk

The unique white rocks you see at Little Jerusalem are part of the Smoky Hill Chalk formation. This chalk was formed millions of years ago when Kansas was covered by a huge inland sea. Tiny sea creatures died and settled on the seafloor, slowly creating these chalk layers over time.

Visiting the Park

Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park opened to the public in October 2019. It's a great place to explore nature and see incredible landscapes.

When Can You Visit?

The park is open all year round, but only during daylight hours. This means you can visit from sunrise to sunset.

Rules for Exploring

To protect this special place, visitors are usually not allowed to go off the marked trails. However, you can explore more deeply if you join a guided tour with park staff. This helps keep both visitors and the delicate environment safe.

Who Manages the Park?

Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park is a partnership between two important groups. It is managed by The Nature Conservancy and the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism. Together, they work to protect the park's unique geology and wildlife, and make sure visitors can enjoy it safely.
