A Look Back in Time
How Scott City Began
For thousands of years, nomadic Native Americans lived on the Great Plains of North America. Later, from the 1500s to the 1700s, France claimed much of North America. In 1762, France secretly gave New France to Spain.
In 1802, Spain returned most of this land to France. Then, in 1803, the United States bought a huge area, including most of modern-day Kansas, from France. This was called the Louisiana Purchase. In 1854, the Kansas Territory was created. Kansas officially became the 34th U.S. state in 1861.
Scott County, where Scott City is located, was formed in 1873. The city itself was founded in 1885. It was named after a famous United States General, Winfield Scott.
In October 1884, two women from Chicago, Illinois, claimed the land where Scott City now stands. They built a small cabin. The next February, two men from Chicago joined them. Soon, many more people arrived, and Scott City was officially founded in 1885. Even before the city was founded, one of the women, Mrs. M.E. De Geer, started a newspaper called the Western Times in March 1885. This helped the county grow quickly.
Because Scott County was small at first, it didn't have its own local government. For legal matters, it was connected to Ford County.
