The Little Machias River is a small but important river located in the state of Maine, United States. It stretches for about 17.7 miles (28.5 kilometers) through a beautiful and natural landscape. This river plays a role in a much larger network of waterways, eventually flowing into the Bay of Fundy.

Where Does the Little Machias River Flow?

The Little Machias River begins its journey in a wild area of Maine. This starting point is called its source. From its source, the river flows for about 8 miles (13 kilometers) towards the east. It then reaches a body of water known as Little Machias Lake.

Its Path to Other Rivers

After leaving Little Machias Lake, the river continues for another 9 miles (14.5 kilometers). It flows generally southeast until it meets the Aroostook River in a town called Ashland. The place where two rivers meet is called a confluence.

Part of a Bigger System

The Little Machias River is connected to a much larger system of rivers. Once it joins the Aroostook River, its waters become part of the Saint John River watershed. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a single river or body of water. This means the Little Machias River's water eventually travels through the Aroostook River and the Saint John River all the way to the Bay of Fundy.
