The Little Piney River is a small but important river located in Amherst County, Virginia, in the United States. It flows for about 7.6 miles (12.2 kilometers). This river is a "tributary," which means it's a smaller stream that flows into a larger one. The Little Piney River flows into the Piney River.

Journey of the Little Piney River

The Little Piney River starts its journey high up in the George Washington Forest. It then flows down the side of Page Mountain. As it travels, it collects water from the surrounding land.

Where it Connects

At the bottom of Page Mountain, the Little Piney River joins the Piney River. Both the Little Piney River and the Piney River flow along the edges of two counties: Nelson County and Amherst County.

Part of a Bigger System

The Little Piney River is part of a much larger river system. After it joins the Piney River, that water then flows into the Tye River. Finally, the Tye River empties into the mighty James River. This whole area, where all the water drains into the James River, is called the James River "watershed." A watershed is like a big bowl where all the rain and snowmelt eventually flow into one main river.
