Discovering the Little River
Where the Little River Begins
The Little River actually starts as two smaller streams. These are called the North Fork and the South Fork of Little River. They both begin in northern Orange County, North Carolina. This area is near a place called Hurdle Mills Road.
The North and South Forks then join together. This meeting point is called a confluence. It happens in northern Durham County. This is near Guess Road and South Lowell Road.
The Little River Reservoir
About 5.5 miles (8.9 km) downstream from where the forks meet, the Little River is stopped by a dam. This dam creates the Little River Reservoir. This reservoir is a very important source of drinking water for the City of Durham.
The dam was built in 1983. When the reservoir was created, it covered a large part of a historic community. This community was known as Orange Factory.
