Little Wizard Stories of Oz is a collection of six short stories. They were written by L. Frank Baum, the famous creator of the Oz books. These tales were first published in 1913. They came out as small, separate booklets, like tiny Oz books.
In 1914, all six stories were put together into one bigger book. John R. Neill drew all the pictures for this collected edition. Each original booklet was 29 pages long. They were even printed in blue ink instead of black!
What Stories Are Inside?
The Little Wizard Stories are filled with adventures of your favorite Oz characters. Here are the six exciting tales you'll find:
- "The Cowardly Lion and the Hungry Tiger"
- "Little Dorothy and Toto"
- "Tiktok and the Nome King"
- "Ozma and the Little Wizard"
- "Jack Pumpkinhead and the Sawhorse"
- "The Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman"
The publisher, Reilly & Britton, wanted to reach young readers. They found that these small story collections worked very well. So, they tried this idea again a few years later.
They took parts from another book, L. Frank Baum's Juvenile Speaker. These were released as six smaller books called The Snuggle Tales in 1916 and 1917. They were also published as the Oz-Man Tales in 1920.
Some of the Little Wizard Stories were re-released in new ways. In 1932, four of the stories came out as The Little Oz Books with Jig Saw Oz Puzzles. Imagine reading a story and then doing a puzzle!
A year or two later, these four tales were released again. This time, it was to help promote a Wizard of Oz radio show. A company called Jell-O sponsored the radio program. In 1939, Rand McNally also published all six stories in three booklets.
