Littlest Pet Shop is a super popular toy series and cartoon show. It's owned by Hasbro, a big toy company. Right now, Basic Fun! makes the toys under a special agreement.
The first Littlest Pet Shop toys were made by Kenner in the early 1990s. Later, in 1995, an animated TV show was made based on these toys.
The toy line was brought back in 2005. Since then, over 3,000 different pet figures have been created! Hasbro also worked with game makers to create video games for systems like the Nintendo DS, Wii, and PlayStation 3. A second animated TV show started in 2012 and ran until 2016.
Hasbro even made online virtual pets you could "adopt" and play with. These websites were called Littlest Pet Shop VIPs and Littlest Pet Shop Online. In 2010, Hasbro added Blythe dolls to the toy line. Many different Littlest Pet Shop products have been released over the years.
In 2022, Basic Fun! teamed up with Hasbro to bring Littlest Pet Shop back again, starting in 2024. This new launch includes collectible figures, playsets, and accessories. To get everyone excited, they even launched a video game on Roblox in December 2023!
Original Kenner Toys (1990s)
The first Littlest Pet Shop toys came out in 1992. Each toy set had special actions, like a part that could move. Many toys used magnets or simple ways to make them move, like flapping wings. Fans and collectors often call these toys "Generation 1" because they were the very first ones.
Fun Pet Sets (1992–1994)
These early sets often had pets with cool features. For example, the Happy Puppy was a Dalmatian dog that could wag its tail with a special magnetic brush. The Hurrying Hamsters could "run" in their wheel. The Ticklish Toucan would flap its wings when you touched its head. There was even a Color Change Chameleon that changed colors with temperature!
Other sets included:
- Li'l Paw Prints Pets – These pets had a stamper hidden underneath to make paw prints.
- Pet Presents – These sets came with two pets and fun accessories. For example, Cutesy Kittens had a cat house and a magnetic mouse toy.
- Cozy Home Pets – These sets featured groups of pets like the Puppy Trio or Gerbils with their own special homes and interactive parts.
- Mommy and Babies – Each of these sets came with a mother animal and five babies. Two of the babies had magnets so they could "suckle" their mom or play with toys.
Playsets and Movie-Inspired Toys
Bigger sets like the Pet Shop and Care Center offered more ways to play. The Care Center was a vet play set with a dog and kitten, plus lots of vet tools.
There were also special toys based on the Beethoven movies, featuring the famous St. Bernard dogs. These included sets like Tug 'n Play Beethoven and Puppy Pool.
More Kenner Collections (1994-1996)
Kenner continued to release new and exciting pets.
Water Fun Pets
The Splashtime Pets were designed for water play. For example, Swimming Ducklings could move in their pond with a magnetic wand. The Deepsea Divers tank had a chameleon that changed colors in different water temperatures.
Talking and Moving Pets
The Chatter Pets included animals like a skunk, raccoon, and squirrel that came with a tree. The squirrel could squeak when a button was pressed. The Chirpy Birds set had birds that would chirp.
Realistic Pets
The My Real Pets line featured popular breeds like the Playful Persian cat or Clever Collie dog, each with unique actions and accessories.
Littlest Pet Shop Zoo (1993–1994)
This collection brought wild animals into the Littlest Pet Shop world.
- Keep Me Safe Pets – Featured animals like elephants and polar bears with special actions.
- Nursery Pets – Included baby animals like a Baby Tiger or Baby Chimp.
- Playful Ponies – Offered different horse breeds with fun features like nuzzling or kicking.
- Wilderness Pets – Introduced animals like a Baby Bobcat or Playful Sea Lion.
Sparkling and Dazzling Pets (1994-1996)
Later Kenner sets focused on sparkle and style.
- Sparkling Ponies – These ponies had glittery details and special actions like rearing up or moving their legs.
- Sparkling Pets – Included animals like the Fluffy Persian Kitty or Silly Yorkie with unique features like movable tails or hair that could be styled.
- Dazzling Hair Pets – These plush toys and figures had hair that could be brushed and styled, like the Tickled Pink Kitty or Pink Puff Puppy.
Kenner also made special sets for McDonald's Happy Meals and toys based on the 1995 Littlest Pet Shop TV series.
Hasbro Toys (2005–Present)
Hasbro relaunched Littlest Pet Shop in 2005. Collectors call these toys "Generation 2" and beyond. These pets had a more cartoon-like look and often had "bobble-heads" that wobbled.
Early Hasbro Pets (2005-2006)
These pets had a round magnet on the bottom of their feet. This magnet let them interact with playsets. Some pets were fuzzy, or had special "magic motion" features. Later, the magnets were removed due to safety concerns.
Pets with Eye Symbols (2007-2008)
These pets had shiny eyes with little symbols in them. A snowflake meant "chilliest," a diamond meant "fanciest," and a heart meant "friendliest." They came in many bright colors, not just realistic ones. Instead of magnets, these pets had a small hole on the bottom to connect to playsets.
This era also brought video games for the Wii and Nintendo DS, where you could play with your Littlest Pet Shop friends.
Vibrant Colors and New Gimmicks (2009-2012)
The eye symbols were no longer used, and the pets became even brighter and more colorful. This time also saw new features like "Walkables," which were battery-powered pets that could move. The "Blythe Loves Littlest Pet Shop" line introduced smaller Blythe dolls that came with pets and accessories.
More Nintendo games were released, like Littlest Pet Shop: Friends and Littlest Pet Shop: Biggest Stars. Some of these games came with special, rare pets.
Generation 3 (2012-2014)
The toy line changed a lot to match the new 2012 TV series. The pets had a different look and new eye styles. Hasbro also introduced "Sweetest Pets" (themed after candy) and "Rolleroos" (pets shaped like small balls). Many fans had strong opinions about these changes.
Mobile games were also created, where you could scan codes from your pets to win prizes.
Generations 4 and 5 (2014-2017)
These pets looked more like the characters from the TV show and were given names for the first time. Hasbro released collections like "Pets Pawsabilities" and "Pets in the City." Because fans really missed them, the bobble-head pets made a comeback for a short time, using the older molds.
Generation 6 (2017-2023)
In 2017, Littlest Pet Shop toys were updated again with new molds and rounded eyes, similar to earlier generations. This line included collections like "Black and White Pop" and "Rainbow." Pets came in three sizes: teensie, mini, and classic. A new show, Littlest Pet Shop: A World of Our Own, also premiered during this time.
Generation 7 (2024-Present)
In 2024, Basic Fun! relaunched Littlest Pet Shop with new molds that fit modern trends, like axolotls and capybaras. These pets have rounded eyes, classic bobbling heads, and shiny eyes. Some even have eye symbols or glow under blacklight!
