Liutgard's Early Life and Family
Liutgard was born sometime between 840 and 850. Her father was Liudolf, a powerful count from Saxony. He was a very early ancestor of the Ottonian dynasty, a famous family of rulers. Her mother was Oda of Billung.
Liutgard was known for being strong-willed and ambitious. She was a loyal supporter of her husband, King Louis.
A Queen's Influence
Liutgard played a big role in her husband's political decisions. She helped King Louis the Younger in his struggles against Charles the Bald, who was the king of West Francia. This conflict was mainly about who would control a region called Lotharingia.
The Battle for Lotharingia
The fight over Lotharingia led to the Battle of Andernach in 876. King Louis won this battle. Later, in 880, the Treaty of Ribemont was signed. This treaty officially gave Lotharingia to East Francia, thanks in part to Liutgard's influence.
Liutgard's Marriage and Children
Before November 29, 874, Liutgard married Louis the Younger. He was a ruler from the Carolingian dynasty. They got married in Aschaffenburg, a town in a region called Franconia.
Louis the Younger was the second son of King Louis the German. Liutgard and Louis the Younger had two children together:
- Louis (born 877, died 879). Sadly, he passed away after falling from a window at the royal palace in Frankfurt.
- Hildegard (born around 879, died after 899). She later became a nun at the Frauenchiemsee Abbey in Bavaria.
