Llíber is a small village in Spain. It is located in the province of Alicante, which is part of the Valencian Community. The village and its surrounding area cover about 21.9 square kilometers (about 8.5 square miles).

Where is Llíber?

Llíber is in the north-east part of the Province of Alicante in Spain. It's found in a region called the Marina Alta, and it's one of several villages in an area known as Vall de Pop.

In 2015, Llíber had about 1,099 people living there. More than half of these residents (about 62.80%) were from other countries.

Llíber is surrounded by natural features. To the north, you'll find Penya Roja, and to the south, there are areas called Lloma Llarga and Tossal del Cau.

You can reach Llíber by car using the AP7 motorway (exit 63), or by taking the CV745 road from Benissa, or the N332 road from Gata de Gorgos onto the CV748.

Llíber shares its borders with several other towns. These include Alcalalí, Benissa, Gata de Gorgos, Jalón, Pedreguer, and Senija.

A Look at Llíber's History

Long ago, an ancient town called Pozo de Gata was located north of where Llíber is today. This town was built by the Iberians, an ancient people of Spain. They often built their settlements on high ground and surrounded them with walls. This helped them defend against enemies.

In 1256, King James I of Aragon conquered Llíber and the lands around it. Later, in 1300, the income from Llíber was given to other towns by King James II.

From 1413 to 1444, Llíber was owned by the Martorell family. A famous writer named Joanot Martorell belonged to this family.

In 1444, Llíber was sold because the Martorell family owed money. It was bought by Gonzalo de Híjar and his wife, Inés de Portugal. Gonzalo then sold Llíber to his son Pedro later that same year. Over time, Llíber also belonged to the Duke of Almodóvar.

In 1609, Llíber had 25 houses. It was connected to the nearby town of Xaló but later became independent.

For many years, Llíber was part of different governments in Spain. In 1992, an Englishman named Lord Perry Harber helped the village grow. He designed and built 80 new homes on land that used to be a vineyard.

What Llíber Grows

Even today, more than half of the land around Llíber is not farmed. In the areas that are farmed, people mostly grow crops that don't need a lot of water. The most common crops you'll find are olives, grapes, and almonds.

Fun Festivals

The biggest celebration in Llíber happens in the middle of August each year. It's a festival held to honor Saint Roch, who is also known as San Roque.
