Senija is a small village in Spain. It is located in the Alicante province, which is part of the Valencia region.

The village covers about 4.8 square kilometers. In 2011, around 661 people lived there.

Exploring Senija's Location

Senija is nestled at the base of a small mountain. It looks like the village is a natural part of the mountainside. The land around Senija is not flat; it has many ups and downs.

You can find Senija near a big highway called the Autovía A-7. This road is also known as the Autovía del Mediterráneo. To get to Senija, you can take the exit at Benissa. Another way to reach the village is by using the CV-750 road. This road connects Senija to towns like Parcent, Alcalalí, and Jalón.

Senija's Past: A Brief History

Senija's history is closely connected to Benissa, a town nearby. In the 1500s, only Moors lived in Senija. By 1535, Senija became part of Benissa's church area.

Later, in 1622, after many Moors had left, only 33 Christian families lived in Senija. This was a much smaller number than before. It showed how much the village's economy had suffered. In the 1600s, a family of traders and knights called the Zapata family owned Senija.

By 1794, about 121 families lived there. Most of them grew grapes to make raisins, which they sold to other countries. In more recent times, the number of people living in Senija has gone down.

How Senija Makes Money

Senija's economy mainly depends on agriculture, which means farming. Farmers grow many different crops here. These include citrus fruits like oranges, carob trees, and almonds.

However, the most important crop is grapes. These grapes are used to make famous raisins that are dried in the sun in the La Marina area. These raisins have brought a lot of wealth to Senija. The village also produces oil, sweet dessert wines, and dried tomatoes.

Because Senija is close to the coast, many tourists visit. They often come to enjoy the local food at the restaurants in the village.

Who Lives in Senija?

In 2007, about 658 people lived in Senija, according to the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE). A good number of these residents, about 37.80%, are not Spanish citizens. Most of these people come from other countries within the European Union.
