Parcent is a small town in the Pop Valley. It is located in the Marina Alta area of the Alicante Province in the Valencian region of Spain. About 1100 people live there. Parcent is about an hour's drive north of the city of Alicante. It is also about an hour's drive south of the city of Valencia.
The town has a small church called the Holy Virgin church. It is surrounded by beautiful hills and mountains. A famous writer named Gabriel Miró (1879–1930) lived in Parcent. He called it a "paradise between the mountains."
Parcent is also close to Jalón (also known as Xaló in Catalan). Jalón is famous for its wine and lively markets. The main jobs in Parcent traditionally involve farming. People grow almonds and oranges in the fields around the town.
History of Parcent
The name "Parcent" comes from the ancient Latin language. Long ago, it was a Moorish town. This means it was ruled by people from North Africa who spoke Arabic. In 1256 CE, King James I of Aragon and his forces took control of the town.
In 1850, there was a serious health problem in Parcent. Many people became sick with leprosy. By 1887, about 20% of the people living in Parcent had the illness. This event inspired the writer Gabriel Miró. He included parts about the disease in two of his novels, sometimes called the "Oleza" novels.
Population of Parcent
In 2006, a count of the population showed that 1,019 people lived in Parcent. The count also found that many residents were not from Spain. About 35% of the people in Parcent came from other countries in the European Union.
