History of Llano del Medio
Early Settlements and Land Grants
Llano del Medio is one of several communities found along the Pecos River. These settlements were part of the Anton Chico Land Grant. This grant was a special area of land given by the government of New Mexico in 1822. It helped people get land for farming and raising animals.
First Inhabitants and Their Lives
The first people to live in Llano del Medio were mostly Hispanic families. There were also people known as genízaros. These were Native Americans who had been captured or displaced and then adopted into Hispanic communities. They moved to this area to find land where they could grow crops and keep their livestock.
Protecting the Frontier
Llano del Medio was an important outpost on the eastern edge of New Mexico. It helped protect settlements in the Rio Grande valley from attacks by some Native American groups. Many people from the Pecos River settlements became ciboleros. These were brave hunters who chased and hunted bison (buffalo). Others became comancheros, who were traders who exchanged goods with the Plains Indians.
