Lloyd Duffy, born on December 8, 1944, is a famous Canadian retired jockey. A jockey is someone who rides horses in races. He was a champion in Thoroughbred flat horse racing, which is a type of horse racing where horses run on a flat track. What's really cool about Lloyd is that he's also licensed to drive horses in harness racing, which is a different kind of horse race where horses pull a driver in a cart.

Early Life and Racing Start
Lloyd Duffy grew up in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. As a teenager, he loved going to harness racing events near his home. He was so interested that he left school to work at a local horse stable.
Eventually, Lloyd moved to Toronto, Ontario. There, he learned about Thoroughbred racing. Because he had the right body type to be a jockey, he learned how to ride these powerful racehorses. In 1966, he earned his official jockey license. His career started slowly, but after his first win on June 29, 1967, he quickly became one of the best new jockeys in Ontario.
A Champion Jockey's Career
Lloyd Duffy had an amazing career in Canadian horse racing. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he was often one of the top jockeys in terms of wins. He raced at famous tracks like Greenwood Raceway, Woodbine Racetrack, and Fort Erie Racetrack. He also traveled to compete in races around the world.
Riding Famous Horses
Lloyd Duffy rode some truly special horses during his career. Two of them were so good that they were inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.
- In 1981, he rode a horse named Deputy Minister. This horse was voted the best two-year-old horse in both Canada and America. Deputy Minister was also named the Canadian Horse of the Year.
- The very next year, in 1982, Lloyd was the main jockey for another amazing horse named Frost King. Frost King was also named the Canadian Horse of the Year. That same year, Lloyd Duffy won the Sovereign Award for Outstanding Jockey. This award is given to the best jockey in Canada.
Awards and Honors
Lloyd Duffy received many important awards and honors for his contributions to horse racing:
- In 1982, he was inducted into the PEI Sports Hall of Fame. This means he was recognized as one of the best athletes from Prince Edward Island.
- In 1990, he received the Avelino Gomez Memorial Award. This special award is given every year to a jockey in Canada who has made a big difference in the sport.
Life After Being a Jockey
After thirty years as a jockey, Lloyd Duffy retired from riding races. However, he still loves horses and the racing world.
On October 17, 1998, Lloyd took part in a fun event in his hometown of Charlottetown. It was a charity event to raise money. He was the special guest jockey in a unique "man versus horse" race. In this race, he rode a horse against a famous sprinter named Ben Johnson.
Today, Lloyd Duffy continues to be involved in the horse racing industry. He works at Woodbine Racetrack, exercising horses for different racing stables.
