Lobster Lake is a cool lake located in a wild area of Maine called the North Maine Woods. It got its name because, from above, it looks a lot like a lobster! Imagine a lobster lying on its back – that's kind of what the lake looks like.

The part of the lake in the northwest corner looks like a lobster's curled tail. As the lake stretches east, it forms the 'body' or thorax of the lobster. The biggest part, reaching south, is called Big Claw, and a smaller arm to the west is known as Little Claw.

About Lobster Lake

Lobster Lake is a large freshwater lake in Piscataquis County, Maine. It covers an area of about 3,380 acres (13.7 square kilometers). The deepest part of the lake goes down about 106 feet (32 meters).

Where is Lobster Lake?

This lake is found in a very remote and natural part of Maine. It's located in the North Maine Woods, which is a huge area of forests and lakes. This region is known for its beautiful wilderness.

How Does Water Flow?

A stream called Lobster Stream connects the lake to the West Branch Penobscot River. This river is about 1.4 miles (2.3 km) north of the lake. Usually, water flows from the lake into the river.

However, sometimes the river and the lake are at a similar height. During very heavy rains or when a lot of snow melts, the river can get very full. When this happens, the water from the West Branch Penobscot River might actually flow backwards into Lobster Lake for a short time! This is a unique natural event.

Fish and Wildlife

Lobster Lake is home to many different kinds of fish. It has its own groups of native lake trout and land-locked Atlantic salmon. These fish live and reproduce in the lake naturally.

However, some other fish, like brook trout, face challenges. Their numbers are lower because they have to compete for food and space. They compete with other fish like yellow perch and white perch.
