Loch Eil (in Scottish Gaelic, Loch Iall) is a beautiful sea loch located in Lochaber, Scotland. A sea loch is like a long, narrow arm of the sea that reaches inland. Loch Eil connects to a larger sea loch called Loch Linnhe close to the town of Fort William.

About Loch Eil

Loch Eil is known for its stunning natural beauty. It is surrounded by mountains and offers amazing views. The name of the loch, Loch Eil, is spelled differently from the name of the Chief of Clan Cameron, which is Lochiel.

Places Around the Loch

Several interesting places are found along the shores of Loch Eil. On the northern side, you can find two railway stations: Loch Eil Outward Bound railway station and Locheilside railway station. These stations help people explore the area.

On the southern shore of the loch is a place called Achaphubuil. Its name comes from Scottish Gaelic, meaning "Field of the booth or tent."

Annat Narrows

Loch Eil and Loch Linnhe are connected by a narrow passage called Annat. In the past, a paper mill used to stand here. Today, you can find a large timber yard at Annat. This is where wood is stored and processed.

The area known as Lochiel is a historic place located east of Fassfern. It is on the northern shore of Loch Eil. This area was once home to important figures in Scottish history.

Clan Cameron and Their Chiefs

Lochiel was the home of Donald Cameron. He was a famous leader, also known as a Jacobite chieftain. A Jacobite was someone who supported the return of the Stuart kings to the throne of Great Britain.

The earliest known home of the chiefs of Clan Cameron was on an island called Eilean nan Craobh. This name means "The island of the trees." It was just outside the entrance to Loch Eil.

Later, in the 1600s, the Clan Cameron chiefs moved from Eilean nan Craobh to Tor Castle. After that, they moved to another place called Achnacarry. Today, Eilean nan Craobh has become part of the harbor works in the area.
