Lock Island across the weir from Hamhaugh Island

Lock Island is a small island located in the famous River Thames in England. It's connected to Shepperton Lock, which is a special gate system that helps boats move along the river. The island is a popular spot for people to visit because it has open areas where you can grab a snack or just relax.

You might be surprised to learn that the Thames River Police have a station right on Lock Island! This helps them keep the river safe. The Weybridge Mariners' Boat Club is also located here, which is a place for people who love boating. The island is even connected to another nearby island, Hamhaugh Island, by a special walkway that goes over the weir (a small dam that controls water flow).

Island History

Lock Island wasn't always home to people. For a long time, it was empty. But in the late 1800s, some people from London started moving there. They were looking for a healthier place to live, away from the crowded and sometimes unhealthy conditions of the big city back then.

Later, during The Blitz, which was a time in World War II when London was bombed heavily, some families found safety on Lock Island. They stayed there, and their families have lived on the island ever since!

Nature on the Island

Even though Lock Island is close to busy areas, it still has lots of untouched nature. It's a peaceful place with wild areas where plants and animals can thrive. One of the special animals that calls Lock Island home is the European water vole. These small, furry creatures love to live near water and are an important part of the island's wildlife.
