Lockwood is a small, unincorporated community in Boyd County, Kentucky, United States. It's located along U.S. Route 23 and the Big Sandy River. Lockwood is about 7 miles south of Catlettsburg, which is the main town (county seat) for Boyd County.

An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government. Instead, it's managed by the county government.

History of Lockwood

Lockwood has an interesting history, especially with its post office and roads.

Early Post Office Days

The first post office in Lockwood opened in 1860. It was named after Jacob Lockwood, who was the first postmaster and owned the land. His father-in-law, David White, had given him the land back in 1809. This first post office closed five years later, in 1865.

Later, in 1881, Jacob's grandson, John Lockwood, opened a new post office in the same spot. At first, he named it Staley, Kentucky. This was because a new train station along the Chatteroi Railroad (now CSX) had just opened there. In 1892, John changed the name of the station and post office back to Lockwood. The post office finally closed for good in 1933.

Important Roads and Highways

U.S. Route 23 is a major highway in the region. Its path through Lockwood has changed over the years.

  • 1964 Road Change: In 1964, U.S. Route 23 was moved to the road that goes through Lockwood. Before this, since 1927, it had followed a different path from Catlettsburg to Louisa, which is now called Kentucky Route 3.
  • Modern Highway: In 1987, a new, modern four-lane highway for U.S. Route 23 was opened. This new road also runs right through the Lockwood community, making travel easier.

Lockwood Today

Even though Lockwood is an unincorporated community, it continues to be a recognized place.

Lockwood Estates Subdivision

In 1971, a large housing area called Lockwood Estates Subdivision and Park began to be built. This development was started by Overland Development, Inc. It includes many homes and a small park for recreation. The name "Lockwood" is still used for this area, which helps keep the community's name well-known among local residents.

ZIP Code Information

Today, Lockwood is part of the ZIP Code Tabulation Area for ZIP code 41129. This ZIP code also includes the nearby city of Catlettsburg.
